FAQ: What’s the process for replacing my roof?

Replacing a roof is a big home improvement project, but it is also important for maintaining the integrity of your home. As a roofing contractor, I understand that this process can be overwhelming for homeowners. That’s why I have created this quick guide to explain the process of replacing a roof, step by step.

Step 1: Inspection and Assessment

The first step in replacing a roof would be to do a thorough inspection of your existing roof to determine the extent of the damage and the necessary repairs. One of our roof specialists will inspect the roof from both the exterior and interior of your house to look fo any leaks or signs of damages. They will also assess the condition of the roof’s decking, underlayment, and other components.

Step 2: Preparation

Once we have completed our inspection and assessment, we will prepare the site for replacement. This includes removing any obstacles or debris from around the exterior of your house and setting up the necessary equipment and tools for the job.

Step 3: Roof Removal

The next step is to remove the existing roof. Our team will start by tearing-off the old shingles and removing any damaged components, such as the rotted wood decking. We will dispose your old roofing in a proper dumpster container.

Step 4: Repairing and Replacing Decking

Next, if we find any damage or rot in the decking, we will repair or replace it. We take photos of before and after to document the changes.

Step 5: Installation of Underlayment

Then, we will install installing the underlayment. The underlayment, synthetic or self-adhered roll, serves as a barrier between the decking and the shingles, protecting the roof from moisture damage.

Step 6: Installation of Drip Edge and Flashing (If Needed)

Flashing is a metal or plastic material that is used to prevent water from seeping into the roof’s joints and valleys. If missing, or completely damaged, we will install flashing around chimneys, skylights, and other roof penetrations to ensure that the roof is waterproof. In this stage, some building department require in-progress inspections. If the county or city we are working on requires it, then we’ll set up the inspection for building inspector.

Step 7: Installing the Shingles

Once the underlayment, metal drip edge and flashing are in place, we will begin installing the new shingles. We will start at the bottom of the roof and work our way up, ensuring that each row of shingles overlaps the previous one.

Step 8: Finishing Touches

Once all of the shingles are installed, we will add the finishing touches to the roof. This includes installing ridge caps, which cover the peak of the roof, and any necessary vents to ensure proper ventilation.

Step 9: Final Inspection

Once the installation is complete, one of our quality control guys will conduct a final inspection of the roof to ensure that everything is in place and that the roof is properly sealed and secure.

Replacing a roof is a complex process that requires careful planning, preparation, and execution. As a roofing contractor, our team has the knowledge, skills, and experience necessary to replace your roof efficiently and effectively.
